New Year's Resolution

A New Year's Resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as adventurous. Some resolutions could refer to improved health, finances, career or education. Recent research shows that while 52% of participants in a resolution study were confident with success with their goals, yet only 12% actually achieved their goals. Happy New Year from Sondhi-Biggs Orthodontics!

Holiday Candy Caution

You don't often think of candy caution with this time of year. Please remember when you are looking at all the wonderful cookies with nuts, candy canes and other hard/sticky items to be careful. Breaking brackets, retainers or causing arch wires to shift can prolong treatment times and cause other opportunities for problems within your treatment. Have a wonderful holiday season. Have a wonderful holiday season from your friends at Sondhi-Biggs Orthodontics.

Winter Necessities

It's finally here. Winter has peeked in and brought the start of snow with it. You may have found yourself digging to the back of your closet wondering "Where are my winter coat, gloves, scarves and hat?" Also, don't forget that it is a good idea to have some items in your vehicle for the "Just in Case" situation, such as: jumper cables, folding shovel, scraper, blanket, flash light, and a basic tool kit. You never know when you will need the 1 item you thought you never would. Have a safe Winter!

The distance we make him travel...

Dr. Sondhi teaches courses to Orthodontists all over the world. A couple weeks ago, he taught a course for the Polish Society of Orthodontists in Krakow, Poland, and shared with them some of the advanced treatment techniques that we use in our office. Although these are techniques that we use routinely within the treatment of our own patients, much of this information is new to many orthodontists around the world.

Superbowl for Saturday's Kids

On Monday, October 25th, Jeff and Karen Saturday hosted their fourth annual event at the Colt's Complex. The event has become one of Central Indiana's premiere charity fundraising events to benefit the Foundation and Kids' Voice of Indiana, a child advocacy serving children in Indiana's court system.

Dr. Sondhi, Dr. Biggs and their wife's all attended the event for the second year. It is a pleasure to be able to support charities such as these within our own community.

Office Food Drive

From now until mid December, we will be having a non-perishable food drive to support Anna's House. Anna's House has been providing support and food for those in need in the Indianapolis area. Since 2005, no one has had to stand in the cold or guess where to go to receive assistance. Anna's House, (named after Anna Molloy) opened its doors to help service the needs of our community.

We are asking patients and their families to help in any way possible. Items collected include non-perishable foods such as jelly, peanut butter, canned fruits, vegetables, soups, pasta & meats, crackers, beans, cereal, etc. as well as toiletry items (i.e. toilet paper, shampoo, toothpaste, diapers, soap, detergent, etc.).

Sondhi-Biggs Orthodontics will match any and all donations made to our office. Thank you in advance for all your support and contributions.

Flu Season

When most people think of the flu, they fear the symptoms of fever, chills, sore throat and muscle aches. While the flu is no picnic, for most people a few days in bed, a lot of hot fluids and some over the counter medicines for symptom relief are enough to weather a moderate case. Yet, for some people, the flu presents a serious threat. Each year hundreds of thousands of people die from the flu worldwide.

Influenza outbreaks generally occur during the winter months, some believe this is because people spend more time indoors and in close contact during these months. Due to the fact that winter occurs at different times in the northern and southern hemispheres, there are two flu seasons each year. Since the flu virus mutates so easily, it is possible for a new strain to evolve between two seasons. To combat these strains, millions of people see their doctor or some type of health clinic to get a flu shot. While not foolproof, these vaccinations are the only effective method for flu prevention.

Pink for October

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If you are not a breast cancer survivor, chances are you know someone who has had breast cancer or is currently being treated for breast cancer. No one (including men, although breast cancer in men is till considered quite rare) is immune to breast cancer. You don't have to have a family history to get breast cancer. Sondhi Biggs Orthodontics supports the efforts in finding a cure for breast cancer.

October is National Orthodontic Health Month

October is National Orthodontic Health Month. Many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are going through orthodontic treatment. These treats may cause damage that could prolong treatment time. The American Association of Orthodontists provides a list of tips and recipes for the Halloween Season at http://braces.org/NOHM/Press-Releases.cfm.

2010 Answers for Autism Walk

On Saturday, September 18, 2010, the 10th annual Answers for Autism Walk will take place. So far, over $40,000.00 in donations has been collected. The 1 mile walk will be held at Coxhall Gardens in Carmel, Indiana. In recent studies, as many as 1 out of every 90 babies born today will be on the autistic spectrum. Autism is now one of the most common developmental disorders. There is no known, or proven cure for Autism. Though various treatments may provide some children with relative relief, current research is limited, due to the lack of available funds.

Fall is just around the corner

With Fall just around the corner, remember to be careful with caramel apples and other Halloween treats that could damage orthodontic appliances. Damaged appliances could cause delays in treatment and unnecessary repair appointments. Have a great Fall!

Are you ready for some football?

Colt's preseason is in full swing, as well as alot of other football programs. Always remember, you MUST wear a mouth guard when you are playing contact sports. All NFL players wear their mouth guards to protect their mouth and you should also. If you have any questions about what mouth guard you should be wearing, or if you should be wearing one, please contact our office for further information.

Piercing your tongue....

Piercing of the tongue for some people is the way to be "cool" or fit in with a group of friends. However, tongue piercing can lead to damaging habits that could potentially cause gaps to appear between the upper front teeth. Just remember, that hole in your tongue could potentially end up costing you thousands of dollars in dental treatment years down the road.

Even though you think the barbell is just sitting in there, it is actually putting pressure against the back side of your front teeth at all times. Every time that ball hits or you accidentally bite down on it you could possibly crack, chip or break a tooth. It may not be as cool as you think and it may be costly.

Back to School

It's almost time to start packing that backpack and waking up early. Before you know it, your first day of school will be here and summer vacation will be over. Remember, when you are stocking up on your school supplies you may also need to pack a toothbrush, elastic bands and mouth guards in your supplies.

Texting while driving.....

Sondhi-Biggs Orthodontics tries to simplify your life any way we can. We offer email reminders that are followed up by text reminders if you would like. Please remember to be responsible while driving, and save the texting for when you arrive at your destination.

So far, 25 states have banned texting while driving (in Indiana, texting is not allowed for driviers younger than 18). Many states have gone a step further, sending kids through courses so they can see the accidents they could cause.

A Beautiful Smile for Everyone

Sometime after the invention of the mirror, but no later than 1,000 B.C., ancient Greeks began using base metals and cat gut in a determined effort to take the smile provided by nature and make it better. Orthodontics has come a long way in just a few thousand years.

Today, gifted orthodontics specialists shape dazzling smiles while creating optimal form and function.

There are orthodontic solutions for every lifestyle and budget. Orthodontics is devoted to building beautiful smiles by bringing teeth, lips, and jaws into a proper alignment. Straight teeth function better, are easier to clean, and are more likely to last your lifetime.

If you would be interested in knowing if you are a candidate for Orthodontic treatment, please feel free to contact our office.

Location, Location, Location!

Our office is conveniently located on the North side of Indianapolis at the 12 o'clock position. Patients travel from all over central Indiana, with easy access from local communities such as Brownsburg, Zionsville, Carmel, Westfield, Fishers and many others! Location, Location, Location!

Have a great Summer...

As the school year ends and summer break begins, many of our patients will travel on vacation or head off to camp. Be sure to pack your elastics, retainers, or other orthodontic needs prior to your departure.

Also, drop us a postcard letting us know the fun places you've visited!! Have a great Summer!!!

Compliance is Key

One of the most important aspects of orthodontic care necessary for a successful treatment outcome, is good patient compliance. Following home care and hygiene instructions, wearing removable appliances or elastics properly, and refraining from eating foods that can damage the orthodontic appliances, results in efficient orthodontic care. This allows for us to meet our treatment goals in a timely manner. Good compliance is the key!!

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Dr. Biggs will be visiting local elementary schools for Career Day and talking to young children about being an Orthodontist. Several times a year Sondhi-Biggs Orthodontics also visits local elementary schools to provide young children with education about good oral hygiene and orthodontic treatment.

They come from all over....

On May 6-7, 2010 Sondhi-Biggs Orthodontics will be hosting 13 doctors that will travel from China to observe in our office. Dr. Sondhi and Dr. Biggs will be treating patients and reviewing treatment planning with Doctors from half way around the world.

After the day is done our doctors work is never over. Dr.Sondhi travels around the world teaching orthodontists about how we treat our patients. Sondhi-Biggs Orthodontics create "Smiles above the Rest" and they are sharing their treatment process with the world!

Race for the Cure 2010

On April 17th, 2010 Sondhi-Biggs Orthodontics participated in the annual Race for the Cure. We have several families within our practice and personal lives that have been affected by breast cancer. We would like to commend all the participants in the 2010 Race for the Cure as well as the members of our team that were able to attend the event.

Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except skin cancer. It is second only to lung cancer as a cause for cancer death in women. Each year it is estimated that 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will lose the battle. Approximately 1,700 men will be diagnosed as well and 450 will not win their battle either.

Green is not always better!!

Sometimes being "Green" is not always better.

To our valued patients,

Your health and safety are important! "Going Green" isn't always in your best interestl Some orthodontists "recycle" brackets and use them on other patients. Our office uses only "new", individually packaged brackets from factory sealed packages. Infection prevention and contamination control are very important, which is why we assure you that each bracket is sterile and is used only for YOU! Another reason why Sondhi-Biggs Orthodontics is "Smiles above the Rest"!

Play It Safe!

Did you know that April is National Facial Protection Month? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than half of the seven million sports and recreation-related injuries that occur each year are sustained by youth between ages 5 and 24. At Sondhi-Biggs Orthodontics, we want our patients to stay safe in the year ahead. Wearing a mouth guard is one of the easiest and least expensive forms of facial protection and helps prevent potential lifelong jaw and mouth problems!

This year, the American Association of Orthodontists has teamed up with sports legend Emmitt Smith to remind athletes with and without braces that mouth guards and other forms of facial protection help avoid serious injuries. To learn more and to see pictures of the football great showcasing his smile, visit the AAO’s Sports Safety Page or contact our office if you have any questions.

While we’re on the topic of sports, we would also like to wish the Butler Bulldogs good luck against Michigan State this Saturday. We’re excited to see our hometown team in the Final Four!

Relationships Make a Difference

At Sondhi-Biggs Orthodontics, we realize that choosing an orthodontist for your family is a serious decision. We strive to develop the strongest relationships possible between our orthodontists, our team and our patients.

From the very beginning, Dr. Sondhi and Dr. Biggs personally explain everything to patients and their parents, creating a strong start to this relationship. We believe that open communication is critical to the treatment process and plays an important role in the final outcome. Our practice has found this relationship improves patient compliance while creating a phenomenal orthodontic experience and results that are smiles above the rest!

To hear one mom’s story about the beginning of this process, tune in to our YouTube channel. If you have any questions about Sondhi-Biggs Orthodontics, we’d love to connect with you by phone at (317) 846-1455 or through our Facebook Fan Page.
