New Years 2012

Many people consider the beginning of a new year a time to not only reflect on the year past, but also to set personal goals for the upcoming year. How are you planning to improve your health and happiness in 2012? We recommend that you make a New Year's resolution to benefit your oral health.

It's important that a New Year's resolution be reasonable and attainable, and they should improve your overall quality of life - for example: Did you know that flossing every day is the best way to prevent periodontal and/or gum disease? Did you know that drinking through a straw when drinking sugary drinks can help avoid cavities? There are many small steps and little improvements you can make to help avoid cavities and gum disease.

Sondhi-Biggs Orthodontics would like to wish everyone a safe & Happy New Year!

When was your last checkup?

Even if you brush and floss daily, as well as maintain your braces, it is still important to visit your dentist approximately every 6 months or as recommended. Why?

  • Your dentist can detect and treat any tooth or gum problems that you may have never felt or noticed.

  • Even thorough daily oral care may not be enough to prevent cavities and/or decay.

  • Routine visits can allow your dentist to treat any problems early to prevent future complications.

When having an oral exam done, your dentist can check the overall health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Check-ups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing . If you are in need of a referral, please let us know and Dr. Sondhi or Dr. Biggs would be happy to help you in any way they can.

Importance of Dental Health

Dr. Biggs and some of the Sondhi-Biggs staff recently visited several elementary schools in honor of National Orthodontic Health Month. The purpose of the visit was to emphasize the importance of regular brushing, flossing and routine dental check-ups with the child's dentist. Dr. Biggs explained some of the important factors for children to understand regarding maintaining their dental health now that they are starting to grow their permanent teeth. A short presentation and video was shown, and our hope is to help motivate the young students to practice good oral hygiene to enhance their overall dental health.

October is the start of flu season

It's hard to believe, but October is the start of the flu season. It is recommended that everyone 6 months of age and older get a yearly flu vaccine. The timing of the flu is very unpredictable and can vary from season to season. Flu activity most commonly peaks in January and February; however, seasonal flu activity can begin as early as October and continue to occur as late as May. Try to avoid the flu by making sure you are washing your hands several times a day, and keeping your hands away from your mouth and eyes. The Doctors and Staff at Sondhi-Biggs Orthodontics follow universal precautions to help protect you from the possibility of getting the flu.

National Orthodontic Health Month

Sondhi-Biggs Orthodontics recognizes that October is National Orthodontic Health Month. Many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are in active orthodontic treatment. These treats can potentially cause damage that may prolong treatment time. The American Association of Orthodontists is providing tips and recipes this Halloween season for orthodontic patients.

Football Season is in full swing!

Injuries to the face and mouth are one of the top sports injuries. Please remember that a dental injury is painful, permanent and costly. Fortunately, most injuries can be prevented by wearing an athletic mouthguard. A mouthguard is a soft, plastic appliance that fits over the teeth and can fit around your braces. When a properly designed mouthguard is worn, the teeth, lips, cheek and jaws are protected. The American Dental Association estimates that mouthguards prevent nearly 200,000 injuries each year in high school and college sports alone. Sports mouthguards are required for high-contact sports such as football, baseball and hockey. But what many people don't realize is that the majority of mouth injuries occur in children between the ages of 7 and 14, often while participating in common activities such as rollerblading, skate boarding or bike riding. Mouthguards should be worn in all activities where there is a risk of falling or head contact.

Remembering 9/11

Though the tragic events of September 11, 2001, are well behind us, the people of the City of New York, the United States, and indeed the world, are still mourning the effects of the shock remaining as if the horrors occurred just yesterday, and for the victim's families, the pain will last a lifetime.

The rubble has been cleared away, and the ashes washed clean by the rain, but the memories will never fade away from our hearts and minds. The world lost much more than buildings on September 11, and even more than lives, but one positive effect that has risen from the tragedy is that we as Americans now treat our firefighters and police officers with a new found respect. Please take a moment on Sunday to stop and remember all that was lost, and all that were affected on that day.

Just getting started with braces:

1. Be gentle with your teeth. If you just had a good long workout, how would you feel? Tired, sore, and achy. Well, that's how your teeth probably feel right now! Stay away from chewy and sticky foods. Find foods that are soft such as yogurt, ripened and sliced fruit, smoothies and milkshakes, Jell-O, soup, etc... ?

2. Eat slowly and carefully. If it hurts to chew something, don't! It will only make your mouth hurt worse. Better yet, don't chew at all. Try mashing the food by pressing it against the roof of your mouth with your tongue. If chewing is needed, use your back teeth. Try eating foods such as soup or macaroni and cheese, so you don't have to chew as much.

3. Don't eat foods too high in sugar or starch. Bacteria feeds on sugar and starch, creating plaque. If plaque builds up around your brackets, it can get under your brackets and eat off the calcium on your teeth. This creates permanent, white marks on your teeth. Foods like carmel, taffy, and other foods high in sugar are not good. Refrain from chewing gum of any type unless you are told otherwise.

4. Take a pain reliever and water to relieve pain. Sometimes water helps to lessen bad taste! You could also put frozen peas in a bag and apply pressure with it onto your teeth as best as you can.

The earlier the better!

Though an Orthodontist can enhance a smile at any age, there is an optimal time period to begin treatment. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7.

Advantages of Interceptive treatment can include but are not limited to: Creating more room for crowded and erupting teeth. Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth. Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth. Preserving space for unerupted teeth. Reducing the need for teeth removal. Reducing treatment time with braces.

When is the "Right Time"

Even though most people think of pre-teens and teens when they think of orthodontics, there are good reasons your child should get an orthodontic evaluation much sooner. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age 7.

Why your child should get an orthodontic check-up no later than age 7:
  • Orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present.

  • While your child's teeth may appear to be straight, there could be a problem that only a orthodontist can detect.

  • The check-up may reveal that your child's bite is fine. Or, the orthodontist may identify a developing problem but recommend monitoring the child's growth and development, and then, if indicated, begin treatment at the appropriate time for the child. In other cases, the orthodontist might find a problem that can benefit from early treatment.

  • Early treatment may prevent more serious problems from developing and may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated.

  • In some cases, the orthodontist will be able to achieve results that may not be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing.
